  • What is Hello Africa Travel all about?

    The name pretty much sums it up. We started Hello Africa Travel, for the love of travel – for the incredible, life-changing thing that travel is. And we wanted to make it easier for busy young people to do more of it.
    Travel isn’t something you can only do in a gap year or when you’re retired. We see it as something to be incorporated throughout a person’s life- a necessary and continuing education that deserves as much devotion as academia.

     

    We curate fun, well-rounded itineraries and take care of the major details to give you more time to explore, experience, learn and connect with the people around you and places you’re in. That way, you can have an authentic cultural experience and a vacation.

  • Why travel with Hello Africa Travel?

    1. Fun. Imagine spending sometime at adult summer camp. With only people your age. In a foreign country. With amazing food. And wine. And culture. And…

     

    2. Hassle-free. We’ve already taken care of the logistics so you don’t have to spend hours planning or waste your vacation time dealing with unforeseen issues, spending money you didn’t budget for, or stressing about, well, anything.

     

    3. Insider knowledge. We already know the best spots, how to get there, and what’s cool about them. This means you don’t have to spend your time abroad on your phone looking up Yelp reviews and reading Wikipedia.

     

    4. A Squad. Solo travel is great but it’s a blast to travel with a crew. At the same time, we know how hard it is to plan African travel with friends. Between varying work schedules, budgets, and personalities, it can be super frustrating to try to organize trips with multiple people. Going on a Hello Africa Travel trip means you’ll always be travelling with 7-14 people around your age, all open to meeting new people, trying new things, and having a good time.

     

    5. No Pressure. Hello Africa Travel allows you to travel with people without the pressure of feeling like you have to do everything together. You can spend the whole day wandering around by yourself and still have people to get dinner with at the end of the day. Even if you sign up with friends, it’s easier for you to break away on your own for a bit in a group setting like this.

  • Who goes on Hello Africa Travel trips?

    Our trips are designed for people aged 25- 35 who are looking to travel more and meet like-minded people along the way.

     

    We get a lot of questions about who goes on our trips so here is a breakdown of what to expect on a trip:

     

    Average age: 28 (most fall between 26 and 32)
    80% go alone
    60-70% women, 30-40% men
    60% say they are single and looking to mingle
    90% are college graduates
    75% live in big cities
    100% want to travel

     

    The most important thing to know is that everyone on our trips chooses to be there, so already you know they are most likely outgoing, open to new experiences, looking to meet new people, and ready to have a good time.

  • How big are the groups?

    Groups fall between 10 and 15 people. We cap the number of people on each trip to cultivate a sense of community without making you feel like you’re part of a herd. Plus, smaller numbers allow us to more easily assimilate into the local community.

  • Ok, I'm in. Now what?

    Great! Once you’ve decided which trip you want to join, click the “book” button on the trip page. This will take you to a secure booking page. Here you can enter your info, and click book. All booking is submitted on a conditional basis, meaning your trip is not confirmed until we have approved you and received your payment (deposit or full).

     

    If you pay in full, your spot and price are guaranteed and you’re set! If you only want to pay the deposit initially, you have until 60 days before your trip to pay the rest. Keep in mind, the deposit guarantees your spot but the price isn’t guaranteed until paid in full.

     

    Once you submit, you will receive a confirmation email from us that you are booked.

     

    Book your flight only after you get a green light from us and make sure to check the trip details to see if you need to arrive by a certain time.

     

    We’ll be sending you lots of reminders leading up to trip so you’re well prepared.

  • What is an Experience?

    Our Experiences are more than a walking tour – it is an itinerary crafted and led by an expert. Our experiences differ from normal city tours because the itineraries are carefully put together by our Insiders – the most knowledgeable and connected locals.

  • How do you choose your Insiders?

    We choose Insiders based on three criteria:

    1. Level of expertise → we only work with leading experts and thought leaders in Johannesburg. We find the bright stars who deliver the best experiences, cross-referencing recommendations and trialling the Insiders to make sure they are the best.
    2. Friendly and approachable character → Experiences is fun and informative! Our Insiders are wonderful people who are easy to connect with.
    3. Availability → We work with experts and their calendars can get hectic. For this reason, we do our best to choose insiders who can be available as frequently as possible to host Experiences.

  • How and where do I/we meet the Insider?

    After payment is received, we will send you an email containing all the details you need for your Experience, including the date, time, meeting place, Insider contact details and the best way to reach the meeting location.

  • Are all Experiences walkable? If not, are travel expenses included?

    Most of our Experiences are walkable, but on occasion, public transport or a taxi might be used to travel between locations. For each Experience, we will notify you if there are travel expenses not included in the fee.

  • Will there be disabled access/facilities?

    This will depend on the Experience and the venues you visit, so please make us aware of your access or facilities needs before making a payment, and we will make the necessary arrangements wherever possible.

  • How long is each experience?

    Typically, our Experiences last 2 or 3 hours, with some lasting a full day, around 6 hours

  • If I would like to add more people to the group than is stated on the Experience page, can I?

    We’re happy to accommodate larger groups and discuss your requirements wherever possible, but we do have different rates for larger numbers and bespoke Experiences. Some Insiders require small groups to create a powerful experience. Let us know about your group at bookings@helloafricatravel.com and we’ll work through the details.

  • Can I bring children?

    All of our Experiences are appropriate for children over 16, but you can browse our particularly family-friendly Experiences here. For children under 16 or with special requirements, please get in touch with us and we will be happy to help you choose the best Experience for your needs. Please note: we do not offer discounted rates for children

  • Can I bring pets?

    No. Unfortunately, your furry friends cannot join you on an Experience, unless they are of course guide dogs. Please let us know about this at the time of booking, and we’ll double-check all the arrangements.

  • Can I film/photograph the Experience?

    Yes, you can. We positively encourage it! Please tag us @meyouhello on any and all social media channels.

  • Do you sell Experience vouchers?

    Yes, we would be very happy to arrange these for you. Please contact our team atbookings@helloafricatravel.com or call us on +27 74 284 2718 – we’ll take care of the details and can even post you or your friend our beautiful card voucher.

    Alternatively, you can use our ‘Buy as a gift’ link to purchase an Experience as a voucher. Once the payment is complete, the Hello Africa Travel team will be in touch with you to determine whether you’d like to receive a paper voucher as well.

  • If I cannot attend the Experience, can I transfer it to someone else?

    Please contact one of our team on +27 (0)74 284 2718 or at bookings@helloafricatravel.com and we will review whether this can be arranged.

  • Can I pay on arrival?

    No. Unfortunately, we do not accept cash. All Experiences need to be paid for in advance in accordance with our Terms of Service. We accept Direct Bank Transfer and all other major credit cards.

  • Are Experiences weather-dependent?

    Unless otherwise notified, all Experiences will take place rain or shine, so please bring the appropriate attire.

  • What if I have to cancel?

    While we sincerely hope that you won’t need to cancel, we do know these things happen, so our cancellation policy is as follows:

    Cancellations made 14 days in advance are subject to a refund, less a 10% service fee. Cancellations made between 7 and 14 days in advance of a scheduled Experience are subject to a refund, less a 30% service fee. Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance of a scheduled Experience are not refundable, and can only be arranged by calling us on +27 (0)74 284 2718 or, email bookings@helloafricatravel.com.

  • Does the Experience include an insurance policy?

    Hello Africa Travel and the Insider do not offer insurance coverage of any kind for our Experiences, nor are we liable for any loss, damage or expenses. Please see our Terms of Service for further details. We recommend that all our guests take out any necessary insurance with their own specialist travel provider.
